This Tiny House Allows her to be an Artist

Lizzie and Patrick built something most people only daydream about — a tiny house that actually gave them their life back. After years of throwing money at rent and living in a dark basement apartment, they finally packed it in and created The Timber Nest, a handcrafted shepherds-hut-style tiny home tucked into the woods behind Lizzie’s parents’ place in England.

What they’ve built isn’t just a home — it’s a reset button. Today, Lizzie is a full-time artist, Patrick has a peaceful work-from-home setup, and together they’ve carved out a cozy, creative life that feels intentional, simple, and beautifully theirs. Enjoy the tour and get inspired.

VIDEO: They Built This Tiny House for the Cost of One Year of London Rent

Highlights:

  • Lizzie and Patrick designed and built their entire tiny house. They rented a local barn, so they had a waterproof spot to build.
  • Each of them took a month off of work to get started on the build and then finished it up on nights and weekends.
  • The tiny house cost about a year’s worth of rent in London, and got them out of a dingy basement apartment!
  • Going tiny has allowed Lizzie, an incredible artist, to do her artwork full-time instead of fitting it in around part-time work.
  • They chose the arched ceiling in order to allow maximum headspace in their cozy loft bedroom. They have a large window that looks out on the pasture surrounding the home.
  • The bathroom is pretty much exactly the width of their standard shower pan, and they have a DIY composting toilet for waste.

This home is lovely! I am a fan of the rounded roof. I like the kitchen set-up, too. Tucked away in the landscape, it fits in and is beautiful. Great job!
