His Tiny Cob Cabins in California

Miguel, also known as “Sir Cobalot,” is a cob-building master who has created hundreds of earthen structures on his own and with others. He specializes in tiny structures because anything under 120 square feet doesn’t have to be permitted in California, where he lives.

The video below looks at his home, the Hobbit Cobin, as well as a few other earthen structures he’s made. The “cobin” is made of three separate tiny buildings — a bedroom, a bathroom, and a kitchen. He has an extra-creative heating system for the bedroom, where the stove is actually on the outside and radiates heat indoors.

This is the Hobbit Cobin. A sweet round bedroom.

Now this looks like a fun place to hang out.

This is the cob bathroom, which is a separate, small structure.

VIDEO: He built a house out of mud & straw… IT’S BEAUTIFUL!

  • Miguel, who calls himself “Sir Cobalot,” loves building with earth to create amazing tiny structures.
  • Most of his homes are made with pallets, stuffed with straw or other recycled materials, and then coated with cob.
  • He adds living roofs to most of his structures, which helps keep the temperature regulated.
  • In California, he doesn’t need a permit for structures under 120 square feet, so he keeps most of his buildlings extra tiny for that reason.
  • His personal home, the Hobbit Cobin, is made of three separate tiny structures (a bathroom, a bedroom, and a kitchen).
