Toyota Sunrader 4×4 Overlander: Vintage Motorhome Converted for Off-Road Adventure

Greg loves camping and found, after years of RV travel, that he wanted to reach more off-road destinations. So he converted a Toyota Sunrader into a 4×4 overland motorhome capable of going where standard RVs can’t.

The rig features a full-sized bed over the cab that lifts to allow access from the living area to the driver’s seat. There’s also a kitchenette, a couch that folds into a bed, and plenty of storage. He even used maps as wallpaper throughout the interior.

Lessons from This Build

  • Vintage Motorhomes Make Great Bases: The Toyota Sunrader’s compact size and Toyota reliability make it ideal for 4×4 conversion compared to larger, heavier RVs
  • 4×4 Opens New Destinations: Converting to four-wheel drive allows access to remote camping spots that standard RVs can’t reach
  • Lifting Beds Create Passthrough: A bed that lifts provides both sleeping space and access between living area and cab without permanent division
  • Maps as Decor Tells a Story: Using actual maps as wallpaper adds adventure-themed personality while being inexpensive and meaningful
  • Convertible Furniture Maximizes Space: A couch that becomes a bed serves double duty, essential in a compact motorhome footprint

Great build and it appears to me more affordable than the ready made 4×4. Well done.

I rarely comment on posts. But I’ve had an interest in motorhomes since I learned to walk. I’ve renovated every kind of recreational vehicle they make. This Toyota 4×4 conversion had me drooling! He did such a great job; I wouldn’t change a thing! In fact, I heard him mention “if I ever want to sell it”. Well, I’d be first in line! I absolutely love it! Kudos to the owners of this beauty! ??
