Their $16K DIY Off-Grid Tiny Home

Tess and Joel needed someplace to call their own in 2020 when they had to return to Australia. Joel’s parents own a stunning piece of property in South Australia, and let the couple put their DIY tiny house on the lot. The exterior is painted like a giant wave, which mimics the curved roofline that offers both visual interest and headroom in the loft.

As avid cooks, they didn’t sacrifice on kitchen appliances. Everything is full-sized so they can easily make the meals they love! The majority of the materials for this home were reclaimed from a house demolition, so they were able to keep the costs at under $25,000 AUD or $16,000 USD. Truly incredible!

The Sea Pod in Australia w/ Outdoor Shower

The interior of the home is all timber, and it’s stunning.

The couch sits in a bump out that actually folds back in if they ever needed to move it.

You can see the solar and rainwater here.

VIDEO: The Inside-Out Tiny House – A Off-Grid Craftsman’s Dream

  • When Tess and Joel had to move back to Australia in 2020, they didn’t have any place to call their own. So they decided to go tiny!
  • About 80% of the materials in this build came from a home demolition that they repurposed.
  • The awning on the house is actually an old sail!
  • The off-grid home has a rainwater catchment system, composting toilet and solar array.
  • There’s a luxurious outdoor shower and a wood-fired tub outside as well.
  • Now that the build is complete, they spend time traveling in their truck conversion and put it on Airbnb when they are exploring the world.
