Sailboat to Overlander to Bus Life! Family Skoolie!

Morgan and Matt travel with their baby daughter Aupi and dog Nandi in a self-converted skoolie. The couple were no strangers to tiny living before their daughter came around — they’d lived in a sailboat and an overlander in Australia for years.

They wanted to move to the U.S. for Aupi’s birth to be closer to family, but also didn’t want to get into the rental market. A skoolie sounded like the perfect solution. They call their home “The Green Bean.”

Family of 3 & Their Skoolie Conversion

They intentionally chose not to have upper storage to keep things open.

They have a crib on the right and the parents’ bed is in the back.

They have an oven and the countertops came from her grandfather’s workshop.

Highlights:

  • Morgan and Matt met in Australia while Morgan was getting her Master’s. They ended up living together on a sailboat, and then moved into an overlander for a while.
  • When the couple found out they were pregnant, they decided to move back to the U.S. (where Morgan is from) to be closer to her family.
  • They didn’t have enough in savings to buy a home, and they didn’t want to get into the rental market. A bus seemed like the perfect solution!
  • Overall, it cost them about $40,000 to purchase the bus and convert it to its current state.
  • The bus has a couch that folds down into a spare bed, a dinette with a special carseat hookup, and a queen bed with a crib add-on.
