While plenty of people build their campervans, not everyone has that initial build turn into an incredible business that has now converted 40 different mobile spaces into homes on wheels! But that’s the story of Gina and Matty, who own and operate Byron Bay Van Fitouts in Australia.

We got the chance to interview them about their story, their plans for the future, and this awesome Mercedes Sprinter 2017 MWB (medium-wheelbase) that they recently completed and are selling. Get all the details below!

How A Couple’s DIY Campervan Became Their Business!

In 2021, Matty and Gina met in Byron Bay, Australia, and soon after bought a 35-year-old yellow Ford Spectron together.

They collected and reclaimed timber pallets from the Byron Bay and Ballina industrial areas, and worked on the camper fitout in their free time.

After documenting the process of building this van together, and road tripping along the East Coast of Australia, a friend of theirs reached out wanting to buy the van off them.

They replied with a number with a decent profit margin, and to their surprise, the friend said YES and paid for it soon after.

That’s how we ‘accidentally’ started a van fitout business.

Matty runs the operations, and oversees our team of builders, while Gina runs the social media marketing and admin.

We are continuing to expand our team, and are looking at expanding our workshop.

We currently do 5 fitouts at any given time, and with demand growing as much as it has been thanks to some of our work going viral on Instagram, we’re needing capacity to build more at once.

To date, we’ve built out around 40 custom campers, across vans, buses, an airstream, caravan, and 4WD vehicles.

The van pictured here is a Mercedes Sprinter 2017 MWB and it’s currently for sale.

Cost for the fitout alone: $45,000 AUD (~$29,350 USD) | Cost for the vehicle and fitout: $99,850 AUD (~$65,122 USD)

Specs include: 6 cylinder turbo diesel high top automatic, great mechanically, fully certified camper van, gas certification and electrical certification.

You get 240v output, 170w Solar, 30ah DCDC MPPT, 200ah lithium, a USB port next to bed, 2000w inverter charger, 240v mains charger, an internal Sirocco fan, and a Maxx fan above cooker.

There’s a 80l internal water tank, 12v water pump, gold extendable tap, undermount white stone sink and outdoor instant hot water shower.

The build has a Camphor ceiling, Camphor bench tops, white pine walls and lightweight white melamine cabinetry.

You also get a Camphor table front & rear, Camphor window frames, black butt waterproof flooring and black aluminum trims.

There are two pull-out benches at rear, a pull-out table at rear, and heaps of additional storage under bed, as well as 2 large drawers.

For heating and cooking, there’s a custom gas box, Fogatti gas heater and a Thetford gas 2 stove burner.

The van has tinted windows, custom leather cushions, a new double mattress to be included on sale, and custom rooftop deck with  climb-through hatch to roof.

  • Matty and Gina got into van conversions after creating their own custom van home.
  • A friend offered to pay them to build another one, and they stumbled into a van building business!
  • This van is currently for sale in Australia for $99,850 (AUD)
