Wild Coast Cottages: Tiny House Village Development on Vancouver Island

Wild Coast Cottages represents an early example of planned tiny house community development in Canada. Located on the southern tip of Vancouver Island in Port Renfrew, British Columbia, this project aimed to transform a former RV park into a waterfront village of small cottages.

  • Developer: Three Point Properties
  • Former Use: Recreational vehicle park
  • Setting: Waterfront property
  • Planned Capacity: Approximately 200 residents
  • Unit Size: 400 square feet per cottage

Planned Cottage Features

  • Wood-framed construction
  • Vaulted ceilings
  • Appliances included
  • Wood flooring

Village Amenities

The community plan included shared amenities to serve residents: a general store, post office, cafes, and pubs—creating a walkable village atmosphere rather than isolated individual homes.

Lessons from Tiny House Village Planning

  • Former RV Parks Make Good Sites: Properties already zoned and configured for small dwellings can be easier to convert to tiny house communities
  • Shared Amenities Create Community: Including stores, cafes, and gathering spaces transforms housing into a village with social infrastructure
  • Waterfront Locations Add Value: Scenic settings can make compact living more attractive to buyers
  • Density Enables Services: Planning for 200 residents creates enough demand to support local businesses within the community
  • Standardized Construction Reduces Costs: Building similar cottages with consistent features allows for efficient construction
