Thermoelectric technology offers one solution to a common off-grid challenge: keeping devices charged without access to the electrical grid. Orange developed prototype “Power Wellies” that generate electricity from body heat while walking, hiking, or dancing—demonstrating how human energy can power small electronics.

Power Generation Technology
Human Energy Harvesting Concept
Technology Details
- Power Source: Body heat from feet
- Technology: Thermoelectric generation
- Activities: Walking, hiking, dancing
- Output: Sufficient to charge small electronics
- Application: Off-grid device charging
- Developer: Orange (telecommunications company)
How Thermoelectric Charging Works
Thermoelectric generators convert temperature differences into electrical energy. When worn, these boots use the heat differential between your warm feet and the cooler outside air to produce small amounts of electricity. While the power output is modest, it accumulates during extended walking or hiking activities.
Lessons for Off-Grid Power Solutions
- Human Activity Generates Usable Energy: Walking, which we do anyway, can be harnessed for practical electricity generation
- Small Devices Have Small Power Needs: Phones and similar electronics can be charged with relatively low power inputs over time
- Multiple Charging Methods Provide Redundancy: Combining solar, thermoelectric, and other sources creates reliable off-grid power systems
- Technology Continues to Evolve: Energy harvesting innovations continue to improve efficiency and practicality
- Off-Grid Living Requires Creative Solutions: Staying connected while living simply may require unconventional approaches to power generation
