At BESIDE LAO in Racine, Québec, the Canopée cabins stand on stilts in the forest, so you sleep up among the trees instead of on the forest floor. You park and walk a short trail to reach them, which keeps the site quiet and car-free. Inside, there’s a wood fireplace, a small kitchen, and big windows looking straight into the branches. It’s about 30 minutes from Magog and an hour and 45 minutes from Montreal in the Eastern Townships.

Living at Tree Level

Lifting a cabin on stilts changes how you experience the forest. You’re at eye level with the canopy, air moves freely around you, and the views open up across the trees instead of into the underbrush. The Canopée cabins are scattered across the site, so each feels private. They’re open year-round, and winter brings snowshoeing, sledding, and snowy views from the windows.

A Cozy, Self-Sufficient Cabin

The cabins run on solar power, with soft lighting and two USB outlets. An indoor fireplace and propane heater keep things warm, and firewood is provided for heating from Thanksgiving through Patriots’ Day. There’s a queen bed and a double sofa bed, so up to four guests can stay. The kitchenette has a two-burner propane stove, a sink, dishes, a French press, and drinking water. There’s no fridge, so bring a cooler.

Bathhouse and Activities

Each cabin has an indoor composting toilet. For showers, guests walk to the shared bathhouse in the main pavilion, which has free showers, heated floors, a hair dryer, outlets, and Wi-Fi. Outside, there’s a deck, a fire pit, and an outdoor dining area. Guests can hike, use the thermal area with spas and a sauna, and paddle on the lake, which is a 10- to 20-minute walk away.
