The Zen is the newest tiny house at Tiny Digs, and it’s the only one the Westras didn’t design and build themselves. It was designed by Bryce Langston, the host of the Living Big in a Tiny House YouTube channel, and built in collaboration with Tiny House Chattanooga.

At 128 square feet, it’s the smallest house on the lot because it was built with travel in mind. Bryce focused on keeping it light, airy, and open, and once it arrived in Portland, Tiny Digs added their own decor to finish the Zen theme.

A Big Deck Next to a Small House

The deck is almost as big as the house. It has room for a pair of chairs, a yoga mat, or a glass of wine at sunset, and it’s how the Zen earns its name before you even go inside.

One Straight Line to a Picture Window

The layout runs in a straight line. A two-person shower is on one side and the toilet and sink on the other, then come the kitchenette and desk, and finally the queen bed under an extra-large picture window that looks over the Tiny Digs Zen garden. Putting the bed at the far end, facing the best window, gives it the best view in the house.

A Calm Main-Floor Bedroom

Green linens, wood trim, and woven lanterns keep the bedroom soothing. Because there’s no loft, the ceiling stays high over the whole house, which helps a 128-square-foot space feel open.

A Desk Nook and Asian-Inspired Details

Across from the kitchenette, a wood desk with two stools is set under its own window. Bamboo artwork, a carved dragon medallion, and a salt lamp finish the theme without cluttering the small space.

What Makes the Zen Special

  • Built to travel: Keeping the footprint small made it easier to move the house to Portland.
  • Bed facing the view: Putting the bed at the end of a linear plan gives it the best window in the house.
  • No loft, more air: Skipping the loft keeps the full ceiling height everywhere.
  • A deck doubles the living space: In a mild climate, a big deck is the cheapest square footage you can add.
