The Bosun Cabin was designed for a woman making a major life pivot. After a lifetime of urban hustle in Vancouver, she set her sights on a quieter, more intentional lifestyle on a remote island off the coast. Think dense woods, ocean air, and a sloping lot that leads into a gulley—basically, a real-life fairy tale setting.
Her vision? A life filled with simplicity and movement. She wanted a small, efficient, and beautiful home that didn’t just sit on the land but connected with it. A place that felt alive with light, air, and views—without needing tons of square footage.

A Tiny Treehouse-Like Cabin Designed for Quiet Island Living
The design of the Bosun Cabin is a perfect example of tiny home design at its most brilliant. The architects didn’t just think about space; they thought about how space feels when living in it daily.
The two-story layout wasn’t just an aesthetic choice but a practical one. By going up instead of out, they slashed costs on foundation and roofing while gaining a peaceful perch in the treetops. The upstairs was reserved for the essentials: a bedroom, an office, and a bathroom, all in the canopy for maximum privacy and tranquility. The office, in particular, was designed as a serene retreat for remote work. (Can you imagine Zoom meetings with a forest backdrop?)
Meanwhile, downstairs was all about openness. The kitchen was cleverly tucked near the entrance, which meant the south-facing wall could be lined with windows—flooding the living and dining areas with natural light. Even the stairway was left open to the loft, adding to the airy, loft-like feel.
Windows with Intention
One of the most remarkable elements of this design is the intentional placement of windows. These weren’t just about letting in light but about creating moments. Views were lined up with stairs, hallways, and walkways to make even the act of moving through the space feel meaningful. It’s the design that slows you down—in the best way.
