This is Jay Craig’s U-Haul box truck to off-grid tiny house conversion. It’s a submission that’s part of the 2020 Simple Solar Homesteading Off-Grid Design Contest, where you can win several prizes just for sharing your design and/or build!
So this is a 17-ft. U-Haul that is being turned into a completely custom off-grid tiny house with a bathroom and everything. The vehicle was purchased for $5,000 and an additional $10,000 was spent on materials. It’s been two years of laboring away on it on the side. Take a look and learn more below! And submit your design to the contest right here.

Once a U Haul, now a tiny home!

The full size bed is cozy, and is actually part of a bump-out in the design to create more space.

The kitchen is right across from the bed, with another bump-out nearby.

The bathroom is 3’x8′ with a door, on-demand hot water, and a full shower.

There’s also a composting toilet that’s custom-built so no need to spend $900+ on a Nature’s Head toilet.

And yes, the bathroom has a door you can completely shut. Something you sometimes don’t even get in a brand-new Class B motorhome that costs over $90,000.

Jay used mostly salvaged materials to build out most of this tiny house, including a locker from an old bowling alley, and the solid mahogany front door with glass.

This is the floor plan so you can get a better idea of where everything is and how all of the space in this truck is being used.

Very smart use of space and I think using slide outs is great
I love slide outs!
The whole camper is a very clever and pretty use of recycled material. I love the counter top and the floor plan. The bathroom is very roomy and well organized. I like the bench outside and just how everything was blended so well even though from different origins. Nice job!
