8’ x 20’ 2024 Studio Series by California Tiny Houses

Here’s another winner of the TinyHouse.com awards! This one is considered the “Best Budget-Friendly” build of 2023. Dubbed the “Studio Series” by builder, California Tiny Houses, TinyHouse.com nicknamed it the “Blueberry” for it’s signature powder blue clapboards.
The 20-foot tiny house boasts a single-floor layout, with a couch in the living room folds out Murphy-style into a bed. A half wall partitions the sleeping space from the galley kitchen, and a 3/4 bathroom takes up the edge of the home. What do you think of this design?

I love the powder blue siding with the cedar accent wall.

The kitchen has a partition to block off the living room.

A mini-split provides climate control.

A T.V. fits in that cutout in the wall.

The couch pulls out into a bed.

The bathroom is at the end of the home, with a toilet and shower stall.

Here’s a look at the layout.

I really like this one! The kitchen has great space for a small area, and the divider between the kitchen and living/sleeping space is more that a divider – its kitchen storage on one side, shared with personal storage and a large amount of space dedicated to a TV that could be shared with books etc. And dare I say it, there appears to be an actual closet, narrow as it may be! I am wondering if one of those combo sofas with the bed that stays in the wall and pulls down over the sofa at night might work better. No one is really comfy watching TV or doing work on a bed. Also could the window over the toilet be moved up the wall a ways so as to make room for a shallow storage piece? Could the cabinet to the left of the sink then be used for rolled up towels? This is a comfortable home for one, maybe with a small storage unit outside (!). Nice price in this market too, and pretty as well!

“I am wondering if one of those combo sofas with the bed that stays in the wall and pulls down over the sofa at night might work better.”

That is the configuration here, it’s just hand built by the builder and not a commercially manufactured unit, and you have to look at the distant photos to see the sofa mode. The purple cushions is the sofa, it flips over to become the bed’s footboard and support.

“No one is really comfy watching TV or doing work on a bed.”

Actually, according to Market Watch, the bed has phased out the couch as the preferred spot to watch TV for 60% of Americans. Despite the Pros & Cons of doing so… While it depends on the type of work and personal preferences but there are people who do prefer to do their work in bed…

“Also could the window over the toilet be moved up the wall a ways so as to make room for a shallow storage piece?”

Yes, as it is on the higher wall side, but can bump up the construction cost a bit as it would effect the framing in that section.

While it would also mean it will not match the height of the other windows (alignment is preferred for curb appeal), mind that this window is on the same side as the entrance, and would make it harder to use that window. Though, it would be better for privacy…

“This is a comfortable home for one, maybe with a small storage unit outside (!).

There are two storage compartments on the exterior, same side as the bed/living room, though, one of them is probably serving as the utility room and it’s unclear if the upper one is part of the closet or not…

I like it , too. It has really everything you need.
The roof shape could be from the front to the back foe better aerodynamics. But otherwise well done.
