Alaskan Campers has been building hard-sided pop-up truck campers in Washington State since the 1950s. The HS 640 is a new, lighter model. It keeps the classic Alaskan design, where solid walls rise up to give you full standing height at camp, then lower for a sleek profile on the road. But it’s built from new composite materials to cut weight so it can ride on many half-ton pickups without upgrading your truck.

A Lighter Alaskan, Built from Scratch

The HS 640 wasn’t adapted from an older model. Alaskan designed it from the ground up around weight savings. The walls are 1.5-inch structural insulated panels with high-density PIR foam and fiberglass skins, which makes them rigid, rot-proof, and rated R-11. The frame uses a patent-pending aluminum and PVC “thermal break” design that stops outside heat and cold from traveling through the metal, reducing condensation at the corners and keeping the inside temperature steadier.

Why it matters: a lighter camper puts less strain on your truck, drives better, and opens up truck camping to people who don’t want to buy a heavy-duty pickup just to haul it.

Built for Off-Grid Trips

The standard power system is serious for a camper this size: two lithium batteries with 324Ah total, a 200-watt solar panel with a Victron charge controller, a DC-DC charger that tops up the batteries while you drive, a Victron touchscreen control center, 30-amp shore power, and external ports for Starlink and portable solar. A MaxxAir roof fan comes standard, and you can add rooftop air conditioning, a diesel heater, more solar, and more batteries.

Inside the Camper

Inside, there’s an RV queen mattress, powder-coated aluminum cabinets in your choice of blue, gray, green, or beige, bamboo countertops, dual-pane tinted windows with built-in blinds and screens, and storage under the floor. Options include an Isotherm fridge, an induction cooktop, an indoor and outdoor shower, a tankless water heater, a composting toilet, and a water filter.
