Plenty of older camper vans are cheap because they need work. This 2008 Dodge Sprinter 3500 in Tarpon Springs, Florida is priced at $11,000 for a different reason, according to the seller: a cracked windshield and a dent in the rear door. Behind those cosmetic flaws is a high-roof, 144-inch-wheelbase dually with an off-grid build, an 800Ah lithium battery bank, solar, and a pull-out king bed.

A Simple, Warm Interior

The build keeps things open. A reclaimed wood ceiling runs the length of the van, a galley counter with a sink sits behind the driver’s side, and the bed is at the back. The seller lists a pull-out king-size bed and a pull-out dining table, so the floor stays clear during the day. Full spray foam insulation helps with Florida heat and with cold nights up north.

Power for Weeks Off the Grid

The electrical system is the real value here. The seller lists an 800Ah lithium bank, solar with a Victron controller you can monitor from your phone, and an air conditioner with a soft-start kit so it can run on a small generator. The seller also notes that the solar and lithium setup alone would cost more than half the asking price to build today. That is plausible, but ask for battery brand, age, and receipts.

The Van Underneath

This is the 2008 Sprinter with the Mercedes OM642 diesel, and a 2008 model has no DEF system to maintain. It shows about 303,000 miles. The seller says the engine, transmission, and coolant were just serviced, seals were replaced, the power steering and a U-joint were replaced, and it has a new battery and new rear tires. Comfort upgrades include a CarPlay stereo with upgraded speakers, upgraded front seats, a backup camera, a 32-inch TV, and a custom hitch.

What It Costs

  • Asking price: $11,000, cash or verified funds (listing checked October 24, 2026).
  • Known repairs: a cracked windshield and a dented rear door. Get quotes for both before you negotiate.
  • Ongoing: high-mileage diesel maintenance, insurance, and registration in your state.

Before You Buy

  • Have a Sprinter-savvy mechanic look at the OM642, transmission, and rust on the body and frame. At 300,000 miles, service records matter more than the odometer.
  • Test the lithium bank, solar, and air conditioner on battery power during the viewing.
  • Confirm how the van is titled (van or motorhome), since that affects insurance.
  • The seller offers a video walkthrough or an in-person test drive. See it in person before paying anything.
