    On the first one I’d build a flat top on the side shelf level with the middle of the mattress so one can sit on it and swing or roll into bed.
    Getting in and out through the bottom with the cover hassle too will get old.
    Nor do you need fancy hardware, just pivot the bed a foot from the end and make the mattress light.
    Best would be a wood or metal frame and stretched adjustable fabric would be light and can use a thinner, lighter mattress.
