36-Foot Family Tiny House with Netted Kids’ Loft and Built-In Dog Crates

Sometimes life takes us in unexpected directions, and for this family of four, that meant making some big decisions about their beautiful custom-built tiny home. They created a stunning 36-foot family-friendly tiny house with a downstairs bedroom, a netted kids’ loft, and thoughtful features designed to make daily life easier — from a dishwasher and washer/dryer combo to a deep soaking tub for the little ones.

Their story offers great insight into family tiny living, the design choices they loved most, and what they learned along the way. We interviewed Rachel about their experience living tiny, what worked well for their family, and what others might want to consider when planning a tiny lifestyle.

Lessons from This Family Tiny House

Rachel and Brendan’s experience offers valuable insights for families considering tiny living:

  • Netted lofts provide safety without sacrificing openness — The mesh enclosure protects children while keeping the space visually connected
  • Main-floor bedrooms work well for families with young children — No ladder climbing needed for nighttime parenting
  • Full-size kitchen appliances make family cooking realistic — The 4-burner cooktop, wall oven, and dishwasher enable normal meal prep
  • Deep soaking tubs are worth the space for families — Bath time with kids becomes enjoyable rather than cramped
  • Built-in dog crates free up precious floor space — Custom solutions for pets prevent clutter
  • Radiant floor heating makes small bathrooms luxurious — Warm feet after showers transform the experience
  • Utilities run significantly lower than traditional homes — Their monthly costs dropped dramatically
  • Less house means more free time — Reduced cleaning and maintenance leaves time for what matters
  • Tiny living is about needs vs wants — Learning to have less is the key mindset shift
  • Custom builders can accommodate family-specific features — Working with Willowbee allowed unique solutions like the netted loft

…plus with baby number 3 on the way… I can understand that. Especially as the other 2 might be youngish as well.

What a fabulously fantastic little home. It’s perfect for all kinds of little families. I feel for the family that has to give it up, as it must have been a hard decision. Hopefully the new family will become fast friends. Good luck to them.
