At Inshriach, near Aviemore in Scotland’s Cairngorms National Park, the owners have spent the last decade building and updating a collection of quirky off-grid holiday spaces, which they say are “spread out over 20 acres alongside the river Spey.” The newest is the Loghouse, a log cabin they built themselves during the 2020 lockdown. It sleeps two and is booked through Canopy & Stars.

Built by Hand During Lockdown

In the owners’ words, the Loghouse was “built by ourselves during the lockdown of 2020, using mostly axes, drawknives and hand tools (and perhaps the odd chainsaw).” It’s “made from Scots pine harvested within a few miles of here,” so the timber in the walls grew in the same landscape the cabin now sits in. A covered porch wraps the front, looking out over the hillside above the river.

A Wood-Burner Living Room

Inside, it’s simple and warm. Canopy & Stars describes candles and tea-light lanterns, rugs underfoot, a sofa that can double as a large single bed, and a big wood-burner that is the cabin’s main source of heat. An initial supply of firewood is included, and you can buy more on site.

A Small Off-Grid Kitchen

The kitchenette has a dual gas hob, a hob kettle, cooking utensils, and a cool box with ice blocks in place of a fridge. Fresh frozen cool blocks are available at the farm, and there’s a barbecue for cooking outside.

A Double Bed on the Mezzanine

A wide wooden ladder climbs to the sleeping mezzanine, which holds “a full size double.” It’s a low-ceilinged space with a little window. The owners say a 1.5-size sofa bed can be added if you have a child or want to share.

Off-Grid at Inshriach

The Loghouse is completely off-grid, with no electricity or running water. Drinking water is provided, lighting comes from lanterns and candles, and there are plug sockets up at the yard for charging phones. There’s a private compost loo next to the cabin and an outdoor shower with a water-heating system, plus more showers up at the farmyard.

Guests can also use a shared sauna on the estate and swim in the river.

If the Cairngorms look familiar, we featured a mirrored cabin hidden in a Cairngorms pine forest earlier this year, at another property in the same national park.

What It Costs

On October 24, 2026, Canopy & Stars listed the Inshriach Loghouse from £129 per night for two. An extra adult or child on the sofa bed is from £25 per night, pets are from £10 per stay, and the shared sauna is £5 per person per session. Rates vary by date, so check the booking page for your dates.

Before You Book

  • It’s a walk in. The car park is about 600 meters from the cabin on a footpath, so pack light.
  • No power, no Wi-Fi. Phone signal is limited (Canopy & Stars says O2 and EE work best). Bring a torch.
  • Pack for the outdoors: wellies, insect repellent, swimwear for the river, and your own toiletries. Bed linen and towels are provided.
  • Getting there: Aviemore station is about 5 miles away; a taxi or bike covers the rest.
