This Mirrored Cabin Disappears Into a Cairngorms Pine Forest

A new holiday cabin in the Cairngorms National Park is clad in mirrors, topped with a living grass roof, and tucked in a mature pine forest at Corgarff. From the path, it almost disappears. One cabin is open now — the first of more planned on a family hill bought in the 1980s.

Corgarff, in the Trees

Goodgrun Limited opened The Cabin at Corgarff in July 2025 — a remote Highland hideaway with views toward the mountains and historic Corgarff Castle. The site sits in Scots pine, on the eastern edge of the park, not far from the Snow Roads and the Lecht.

MAC Architects designed it to sit quietly: a sedum roof, corten and mirrored cladding, panoramic glass. The official line is that modern design can complement the wildness, not compete with it.

Built for Two

It’s a cabin for two. A king-size bed, a log burner, heat from an air-source heat pump, Wi-Fi, Sky TV, and a full kitchen. The long side opens onto a glass-railed deck in the trees — a hanging lounger, a couple of chairs, and that wall of forest.

The private outdoor bath is on the same deck. Floor-to-ceiling sliders bring the pines inside. The interiors are Scandinavian: light plywood, a small oak table, sheepskin on the chairs, a framed moss piece on the wall.

A Family Hill

Director Rachel Gray runs the family business. Her parents, Colin and Esther Tawse, bought the hill in the 1980s with a long-term idea of doing something in harmony with the land. This first cabin is the only one open for now. More are planned later — up to a dozen, if the rest follow.

“We wanted to create a place where people could truly switch off, connect with nature, and enjoy the quiet beauty of this part of Scotland,” Rachel said. “This first cabin is not just a building — it’s a reflection of our family’s love for this landscape, and our belief that modern design can complement, not compete with, the wildness of the Highlands.”

The cabin is a holiday rental, not a house for sale. Book through cairngormselfcatering.com — that’s the main link, and it points to the Airbnb listing if you’d rather book there. One cabin is open; more are planned later.
