Calpine Lookout is a fire lookout you can rent for the night, perched on a rocky ridge at 5,980 feet in California’s Tahoe National Forest. Built in 1934 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, it’s one of only three remaining enclosed windmill-style lookouts in the state. Guests climb the outside stairs to a 14-by-14-foot room at the top, wrapped in windows, with views over miles of Sierra Nevada forest.

A 1934 Lookout Tower
The white three-story tower was built to watch for wildfires, and it looks much the way it did in the 1930s. Exterior stairs wrap around the side up to the observation cab, the only part of the tower you can rent. A wooden catwalk circles the cab, so you can step outside and take in the view from every direction.

Calpine sits about 40 miles from Truckee. From the top, you look out over a dark evergreen canopy, rolling ridges, and on clear days, snow on the far peaks.

Inside the 14-by-14 Cab
Inside, the cab is simple and cozy, with two twin beds, pale green cabinets, a small sink, and windows on every wall. There’s no electricity or running water. Instead, propane powers everything: three lights, a heater, and a four-burner stove with an oven, all running off the lookout’s own propane tank.

You’ll need to bring all of your own water. At the base of the tower there’s an accessible vault toilet, a picnic table, and a fire ring. Campfires are often restricted during fire season, so check current rules on Recreation.gov before you go.
A Year-Round Escape
In winter, deep snow covers the tower and the surrounding forest, and the drive in can turn into a snowmobile or ski trip. It’s a very different experience from a summer stay, and just as memorable.
