Jersey Jim Lookout is a historic fire tower you can sleep in, standing in an aspen-lined meadow in Colorado’s San Juan National Forest near Mancos. At almost 10,000 feet, its cab sits on a deck 55 feet above the ground, with windows on all four sides looking out over forested ridges and distant peaks. The original fire finder is still inside.

The volunteer Jersey Jim Foundation restored the tower in 1991 and still runs and maintains it today. It’s open for overnight stays from mid-May to mid-October, with stays of one or two nights booked through Recreation.gov.
A Timber Tower 55 Feet Up
The tower’s tall timber legs lift the mint-green cab high above the treetops. Getting there means climbing the long stairway up the frame, so this stay is best for anyone comfortable with heights.

A Wraparound Deck Above the Trees
A deck wraps all the way around the cab, and it’s the best seat in the house at sunset. From up here, the meadow and aspens spread out below you.

Look straight down and you’ll see the tower’s own shadow stretching across the meadow and road.

Views in Every Direction
The cab was built for spotting fires, so the views go on for miles. Windows wrap all 360 degrees, framing ridge after ridge of forest.

Inside the Cab
Inside, the cab keeps its original furniture: a double bed, a dresser, and a dining table for four, with the historic fire finder in the center of the room. There’s no electricity or running water. Propane runs the heat, lights, refrigerator, and stove with oven, and there’s a sink, so bring all the water you’ll need.

The lookout sleeps up to four people, and at least one guest must be over 21. Children under 8 and pets aren’t allowed. You’ll pick up the key at P&D Grocery in Mancos (it closes at 8 p.m., and you’ll sign a waiver), then drive about 14 miles north on Forest Road 561.
