For many, van life is about disconnecting and getting back to basics. But for a new generation of nomads, it’s about bringing the comforts of home — including high-tech hobbies — on the road. This van build by BTBuilds is a perfect example, featuring a custom, built-in gaming system that turns a mobile living space into a high-performance gaming rig.

Framing and Insulation for a Rugged Interior
The build begins with the foundational work that makes or breaks a van conversion: framing and insulation. Using 3M Thinsulate, the builder ensures the van is well-insulated against temperature extremes while remaining easy to install. The insulation is glued directly to the van walls, providing a thermal barrier that’s critical for protecting the electronics inside.
Framing is equally meticulous. The builder installs center rail supports and frames out the curved walls of the van. This provides secure mounting points for the custom cabinetry and the bed platform that will eventually house the gaming system. It’s a reminder that even the most “tech-heavy” build starts with traditional carpentry and thoughtful layout planning.
High-Performance Electrical Prep
To power a gaming system and the rest of the van’s appliances, a robust electrical system is a necessity. The builder uses Renogy equipment, including solar panels and a distribution panel. The pre-wiring phase involves running cables for both 12V and 120V systems, ensuring that everything from the lights to the high-end gaming console has a dedicated power source.
The build isn’t without its challenges, however. The video shows the builder correcting a common mistake: wiring cables directly to the hot bus bar of the distribution panel. It’s a great “learning moment” for DIYers that emphasizes the importance of double-checking your work and understanding the electrical “guts” of your vehicle before you seal the walls.
What’s Next for This High-Tech Van?
With the framing, insulation, and electrical prep complete, the van is ready for its more visible features. The builder is currently working on the upper and lower cabinets and, of course, the integration of the gaming system itself. Once finished, this van will be available for rent, giving others a chance to experience the ultimate “gamer on the road” lifestyle. Subscribe to BTBuilds for Part 2, coming soon.
