The Yama Vans Taiyō: A Sprinter Camper Built for Biking, Skiing & Paddling

Continuing through Yama Vans’ Robson01N builds, the Taiyō is one of the Calgary, Canada shop’s most lifestyle-driven conversions yet. It was built for two physicians who prioritize movement and low-impact living — a couple whose free time revolves around biking, skiing, paddling, and recharging off the grid. To support that, this two-seat Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 144 wraps a warm, energizing interior of burnt-orange and teal around the practical bones of an adventure rig: a full-length bed, a bike-loaded gear garage, a galley that expands when you need it, and the off-road and off-grid hardware to get deep into the mountains and stay there.

A Warm, Health-Forward Cabin

Where many adventure vans play it safe with neutral tones, the Taiyō leans into color and warmth. Burnt-orange upper cabinets pair with deep teal lowers and clean white counters for an interior that feels energetic and bright — fitting for owners built around movement. The open layout keeps a bench seat, galley, and rear bed all connected, with big windows and a powered roof fan keeping the space airy after a long day outside.

A Lengthwise Bed for Two

Like the rest of Yama’s compact builds, the Taiyō uses a fixed lengthwise bed so two adults can stretch out full length on a 144 chassis. Set beneath the warm orange cabinetry and lit by a wall of windows, it’s a restful spot to recover, with a powered fan overhead and storage cubbies within easy reach for the things you want close at hand overnight.

A Galley That Expands When You Need It

The kitchen is compact but well thought out, with a sink and a sculptural black faucet over teal cabinetry, a compressor refrigerator, and a cooktop — everything two active people need to fuel up properly. Tucked just below the lengthwise bed sits the gear garage, so bikes and equipment ride right behind the kitchen.

The clever part is a pull-out counter extension that slides out to nearly double the prep surface when you’re cooking, then tucks away to keep the aisle clear the rest of the time. It’s the kind of space-multiplying detail that makes a small galley genuinely usable for real meals.

A Dinette With a View

Across from the galley, a wood table mounts to swing into place over the bench seat, creating a spot to eat, plan a route, or get a little work done. A large window beside it frames the landscape, and a nightstand-style cubby keeps water bottles and essentials within reach — a simple, flexible living area that converts easily between modes.

A Gear Garage Loaded for Bikes, Skis, and Paddles

For a couple whose seasons revolve around biking, skiing, and paddling, the rear gear garage is the heart of the build. Open the back doors and there’s room for two full-size mountain bikes plus the rest of the kit, all loaded straight through the back beneath the elevated bed. The rear door panels carry MOLLE-style organization and a first-aid kit, keeping the muddy, snowy gear secured outside the living space.

Inside, the same attention to active living continues: dedicated wall storage holds helmets and gear on MOLLE panels, so everything has a place and nothing rattles loose on rough roads to the trailhead.

Built to Recharge Off-Grid

The whole point of the Taiyō is to get its owners far from the everyday and let them stay a while. With its house power, water, and ventilation systems, it’s set up to recharge off-grid for days at a time — pull into a quiet overlook, set out a camp table, cook a real meal, and unwind by the fire without a hookup in sight.

Off-Road Ready

Getting to the good spots takes a capable platform, and the Taiyō is dressed for it. The rugged Sprinter 144 rides on off-road tires and upgraded suspension, with a roof rack, a swing-away spare, a front light bar, and amber auxiliary lights for confidence on rough, remote routes — whether that’s a gravel riverbed or a long forest-road approach to a trailhead.
