The Phoenix Earthship near Taos, New Mexico, has its own indoor jungle. Its glass greenhouse holds towering banana trees, grape vines, birds, turtles, and a fish pond with a fountain, all thriving in the high mountain desert. The 5,300-square-foot building is completely off-grid, and Earthship Biotecture rents it out by the night. Lonely Planet named it one of its top ten eco-stays in 2014.

What Is an Earthship?

Earthships are off-grid homes designed by Earthship Biotecture and built from natural and recycled materials, like earth-packed tires and walls of colored glass bottles. They’re designed to heat and cool themselves, collect their own water, and grow food indoors. The Phoenix sits on a high desert mesa in the Sangre de Cristo mountains, about 14 miles northwest of Taos.

A Jungle in the Desert

The outer greenhouse creates its own microclimate, so plants flourish year-round even when it’s freezing outside. Behind it, the inner living spaces stay cozy and quiet. The complex also has a food garden, an Earthship-style chicken coop, an outdoor fire pit, and a propane grill.

Kitchen and Living Spaces

The full kitchen has a concrete island and bright red cabinets on a stone floor, and the living room centers on a sculptural fireplace with water flowing over rock. Natural wood vigas, curving walls, and glowing bottle walls give every room a handmade, artistic feel.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

The three bedrooms hold two king beds, a queen, and a full, plus there’s a twin, so the whole building sleeps six, or up to eight with extra guests. Colored bottle walls catch the light in the bedrooms, and the two bathrooms have sculpted tubs and mosaic sinks.
