Single Mom Travels with 3 Teens in a Skoolie

Amanda and her three teenage children decided to go tiny in a school bus conversion about three years ago. It took them about 18 months to convert the bus into a home on wheels, and they’ve been traveling in it for another 18 months.

The bus has many reclaimed and recycled features, which is one of the ways they kept costs down. They have plenty of seating in the living room so all the kids are comfortable, and a compact bathroom that meets their needs. Watch their inspirational tour below!

Their $30K Bus Conversion Took 1.5 Years

Each kid has a couch (with a seatbelt) to sit on during transit.

The countertop is a door covered in paint and epoxy from their former home.

The two younger children have bunks, and the oldest now enjoys the couch.

Highlights

  • Amanda worked as a teacher for 12 years, but, with her children, decided to make a shift and move into a self-converted skoolie about three years ago.
  • It took them a year and a half, working nights and weekends, to complete the build, and they kept the conversion costs to around $30,000.
  • The children are now homeschooled after years in the public school system and enjoy the freedom it affords them to explore the country while still learning.
  • They have a cool green camp oven indoors and a Blackstone oven outdoors.
  • While they originally built three bunks in the skoolie, the eldest son has outgrown them and now prefers to sleep on the front couch.
