On a sheep farm in Barßel, in northwestern Germany, you can spend the night in a wooden barrel. The Sleeping Barrel sits in a small birch grove in the middle of a sheep pasture, with a cozy loft bed, a little table, and a terrace where the sheep wander right up to say hello. Even the bedding is special: the pillows and blankets are made from the wool of the farm’s own sheep.

A Cozy Barrel for Two

The curved wooden barrel is made for two people. Inside, there’s a sleeping loft at the back and a bench with a table up front, all finished in warm, light wood. An infrared heater on the ceiling keeps it cozy on cool nights, and there’s lighting inside and out plus outlets for charging your phone.

The farm’s sheep-wool bedding helps regulate your body temperature while you sleep, so you stay warm without overheating. Outside, a terrace looks out over the pasture.

Life on the Farm

The farm is the heart of this stay. Hosts Luisa and Jan left a rental apartment in the Rhineland in 2021 and moved to Elisabethfehn, part of Barßel, to start over on the land. Today they share a big property with cottage gardens, orchard meadows, sheep pastures, and a natural pond.

There’s plenty of room to relax and explore, with hammocks, lounge chairs, play areas, and a barbecue spot. Campfires are allowed when the weather permits, and the barn has covered bike storage with e-bike charging, making it a great base for cycling the flat fen country around Barßel. The farm shop sells the same sheep-wool pillows and comforters you sleep under, plus seasonal vegetables from the farm garden, and there is free Wi-Fi around the buildings, garden, and pond.

Good to Know

This is a simple stay. There’s no cooking in the barrel, though you’ll find an electric kettle, a French press, dishes, and utensils. The toilet and a modern shower are in a shared bathroom building nearby. Parking is free, about a 100-meter walk from the barrel.
