Yes, you can sleep in a windmill. Ohessaare Tuulik is a traditional windmill on the Sõrve peninsula of Saaremaa, Estonia’s largest island, just a short walk from the Ohessaare sea cliffs. Guests get the whole mill to themselves, with a double bed up top, a sofa bed below, and the Baltic Sea just beyond the junipers.

A Windmill Rebuilt on Its Original Site

The windmill was rebuilt on its old site in 2010 and opened for overnight stays in 2011. Its stone base, wooden body, and big lattice sails make it a landmark on this quiet stretch of coast.

A Double Bed at the Top of the Mill

Upstairs, a large double bed fills the top of the mill under the wooden walls. It’s reached by a steep wooden staircase, so pack light and take the climb slowly. The mill hosts up to five people. Downstairs there’s a single sofa bed, and two extra beds can be added if needed.

From the bed, the stairs drop straight down into the mill. Bed linens and small towels are included with every stay.

Simple, Off-Grid Comforts

There’s no electricity in the windmill. Instead, solar panels power cozy lighting and let you charge your phone. A separate washing room and a composting bio-toilet sit right next to the mill. It’s a simple setup, which is part of the charm: you fall asleep to the sea breeze, not the hum of appliances.

Outside, there’s a picnic table and a small wooden outbuilding, with the sea behind. Breakfast isn’t included, but you can pre-order it, and a nearby summer café serves coffee and pastries daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
