Lessons from This Village

  • Theme Consistency Creates Immersive Experiences: Building an entire village around the Hobbit aesthetic—not just individual homes—transforms a vacation stay into a complete escape from everyday surroundings
  • Perimeter Design Reinforces the Fantasy: The cedar-slice wall blocking off the shire demonstrates how boundary treatments can enhance themed properties by creating a sense of entering another world
  • Faux Materials Achieve Looks Without Maintenance: Using artificial greenery on roofs captures the grass-covered hobbit hole appearance without the irrigation, structural, and upkeep demands of living roofs
  • Family Collaboration Enables Large Projects: The uncle-nephew partnership shows how relatives pooling skills and time can accomplish ambitious builds that would be difficult for individuals alone
  • Location Amplifies Theme: Positioning the village on a Tennessee mountainside near the Smokies aligns with the rolling hills of the Shire, making the setting work with rather than against the fantasy theme

Wow! I’m in love! What a lovely, magical, got-to-go-there place. Every home is amazing and the setting is so beautiful. I love the entry wall and the outdoor spaces. What a wonderful world!

Couldn’t see enough of it to know whether I would be interested. After about 30 seconds, an obnoxious, aggressive ad would cover the entire page and I couldn’t see the content. Advertising is fine, but this is obnoxious!

For some reason, I see hobbit homes as playhouses for children. Perfect for a family of gnomes though.

Lots of fun touches on these hobbit homes. I do not care for the fake greenery.

It’s a bit harder to find a builder willing to take this kind of projects on these days, present economy has forced many builders to move away from full custom work. However, you can still find full custom builders, if it’s in your budget to do so, and you’ll just need one who can do custom metal/steel fabrication to make things like the hobbit door… Otherwise, this may need to be a DIY project…
