When Katya lost her job in 2020, she used her stimulus checks on something tremendous—a budget van conversion! She and her brother spent five weeks working hard to transform this camper van into a home-on-wheels.
About six months ago, she decided to hit the road full-time in her rig, and she’s been loving the nomadic lifestyle. Her build is simple—there’s no fridge or bathroom—but it works for her! And she only spent $10K on the entire thing!

Six Months in Her Budget Low-Top Van
She has a mini “loft” over her bed for extra storage.
She can comfortably rest in her full-sized bed.
I love the L-shaped butcher block.
VIDEO: Van Life – Her Self Built $10k Tiny Home
Highlights:
- Katya had extra stimulus money and time off from work, so she decided now was the time to build out a van!
- Her conversion has some huge drawers under her full-sized bed, which allows her to store oodles of craft supplies.
- She doesn’t have a bathroom or refrigerator in her rig, but hasn’t really needed them in the 6 months she’s been traveling full-time.
- She uses a thrifted milking stool as her main “seat” in the low-top van.
- While she admits that she and her brother had no idea what they were doing when they built this rig, the results are lovely and work for her needs.
