Van Life at 80: Patty’s $200 Minimalist Build After 60 Years on the Road

Patty is an 80-year-old who has been living on the road for 60 years. She’s proof that age is no barrier to van life—and that an expensive build isn’t required either.

Still working as a business consultant and running her own YouTube podcast (the Patty Serrano Podcast), she lives by the Japanese concept of Ikigai: doing what you love, what you’re passionate about, and what you can monetize. She also found love later in life, meeting her partner at a New Year’s Eve campfire in Quartzsite.

Patty’s $200 Minimalist Van Build

Patty’s current home is a 2004 Cono van. Her approach demonstrates that van life doesn’t require a massive investment—she spent approximately $200 on the interior build.

Simple, Clean Interior Design

Everything inside is simple, clean, and white. She found a desk on Facebook Marketplace for free, and her palm tree curtains cost about six dollars at a thrift shop. For power, she uses a small Jackery unit to charge her phone and laptop. Instead of a power-hungry refrigerator, she relies on a block-ice cooler that keeps food fresh for a week—and since she prefers buying fresh food every few days anyway, it works perfectly.

60 Years Without “The Knock”

Patty has successfully stealth camped for decades without any issues from authorities. Her main advice to those considering van life: let go of the fear. The barriers people imagine are often bigger than the reality.
