From Military Truck to Mobile Fortress: Meet the Ultimate “End Times” Rig by Chad Leadbetter

In the world of overlanding and van life, there are builds, and then there are fortresses. We’ve found one that truly redefines “go-anywhere, do-anything”: a massive, heavy-duty rig built on a military Stewart and Stevenson chassis with a rugged ambulance box conversion added to it.

The owner/builder, Chad, affectionately calls it the ultimate vehicle that can “survive the end times.” But this project is about more than just life on the road; it was a four-year passion that helped him achieve over three years of sobriety.

Chad’s passion project not only showcases incredible engineering but also marked his path to sobriety

This beast features everything you could imagine: a Caterpillar engine, an unbelievable amount of specialized, custom storage—including a basement for water tanks and tools—solar power running the AC, and even a spacious fold-down back porch for beach hangouts.

The Unexpected Twist: From Flipping to Freedom

Interestingly, while Chad poured his heart into building this truck, his journey recently took an unexpected turn toward a smaller, more nimble life. Having previously bought, restored, and sold over 20 motor homes for profit, he recently took on a six-month van build with the intention of flipping it to make money to fund his truck project.

However, a trip to Florida to test the van and escape the cold solidified a new path. A month into his van life experience, Chad realized he had found the “more freedom” and “more enjoyment” he was seeking. He made the spontaneous decision not to sell the van, concluding that his time with the immense military truck was coming to an end.
