Julie and Ryan wanted a place that felt like home, but couldn’t find any affordable options in California, so they built a tiny house! They looked for floor plans that would provide a separate loft office for Julie. Still, they ultimately decided to create their own design that carefully incorporated everything they needed for themselves and their dog, Nuggs.
Their craftsman-style design features a loft with space for a King-sized bed, accessible via storage stairs, and a long galley kitchen with full-sized appliances and lots of counter space. The back bathroom has a composting toilet system, a washer/dryer, and a walk-in tiled shower stall. Enjoy examining all the details below!

While making the bed is hard, having a King-sized mattress was a non-negotiable for this couple.

VIDEO: Couple builds their affordable DREAM HOME for $50k in a Tiny House Village
Highlights:
- Julie and Ryan were at the point in their adult lives where they wanted to own something, but most of the housing in California was way out of their price range.
- They chose to build their own tiny home which saved them a lot of money and allowed them to design it to meet their specific needs.
- The couple imagined everything they wanted to keep in their tiny house and then made sure to make a designated spot for that item. There’s a home for Ryan’s Tibetan singing bowl, Julie’s instruments, and Nugg’s portrait and dog treats.
- Because they want to own land someday, they went with a DIY composting toilet in the tiny house and made sure the electrical system would work with solar panels someday down the road.
- They purchased a small exterior shed to house all the tools they purchased to build their $50k tiny home!
