Off-Grid Retirement in his Self-Built Tumbleweed Tiny House

This post contains affiliate links.

While we show off plenty of homes built in a couple of months or even a couple of years, this might be the first one we’ve featured that took a full decade from start to finish! Patrick purchased the Tumbleweed plans and the trailer nearly 10 years ago, and since he was working full-time and doing everything himself, he took his time in finishing the build.

Once he decided to retire and found the perfect plot of land for his home, he decided to wrap up the building process and move in. He ended up building a deck and a small workshop, but has big dreams of creating a large workshop for his woodworking. Just wait until you see the awesome slide-out staircase that takes him to his loft bedroom.

VIDEO: Retiring in a self-built Tiny House on his own private land

Highlights:

  • Patrick bought Tumbleweed tiny house plans about a decade ago just to give himself the challenge of building a tiny home.
  • He used tons of reclaimed materials, since he was able to take his time.
  • He finally moved the THOW to an off-grid property he purchased last March.
  • Since then, he worked on building a small workshop for his wood-working and a large deck to connect the two of them.
  • His home has an innovative “drawer” stair system that pushes into the wall when he doesn’t need to go up to his loft bedroom.
  • Using concrete, he was able to build a neat mini-tub and shower stall across from his kitchen space.
  • Although he’s largely retired, he does still have a woodworking business and dreams to build a large workshop on the property.

The custom concrete sink and tub are great. The pull out stair is really cool, too. Very nice house!

What a great way to retire! With your own custom home that can be moved to your own land, the options were many. It’s beautiful and cleverly built. Great job!
