I was just contacted by Jack Ballo who is a filmmaker working on a documentary on homeless people, tent cities, and potential tiny house villages for those in need and I wanted to share it with you.

There’s a lot we don’t see that goes on unnoticed and I believe this film gives us all a glance at why affordable housing is so important. And why tiny housing for the homeless is so important. And why standing up to laws that are unjust like building codes is so important.

In this particular case, we see a community of homeless people taking care of themselves without the help of government funding. And sadly, they end up arrested and mistreated by the authorities. Not only that, but they also have destroyed their homes.

So far there have been a few areas in the United States adopting the tiny house movement’s principles as a way to uplift and empower the homeless using tiny house villages. That’s right. Tiny homes for the homeless.

We’ve seen it in Seattle. We’ve seen it in Texas. We’ve seen it in Wisconsin. We’ve seen it in Eugene, Oregon (Emerald & Opportunity Village). We’ve seen it in Chico, California.

And we’ve even seen success stories, like this formerly homeless couple who have been happily living tiny for 6+ months now.

The question is, where is it going to happen next?

One place that seems to be making definitive plans for it is Portland, Oregon where the mayor, Charlie Hales, is enamored with the concept.

Most of you already know about Macy Miller. She’s the woman who built her own 196 sq. ft. DIY tiny house on wheels for only $11k.

Right now I wanted to give you a quick update because she’s recently put together a video for us where she gives you a full tour of her tiny home and explains how everything inside it works.

She took about 18 months from start to finish because she was working two jobs and doing volunteer work while building it. At the time that she made this video she’d been living in the tiny home for a year and 3 months. Enjoy!

Meet Joel Fleck. When he needed to find a home after college he decided instead of paying a high amount of rent in Sonoma county, that he would opt to design and build his own tiny home on wheels instead.

So, according to the story at Faircompanies, he bought an abandoned trailer for only $300 and started building. Two years and $25,000 later he now has his own debt-free tiny house. Did I mention that he’s 6’4″ tall? And the $25k includes purchasing all the tools he needed. Not bad! I’m really excited to share the video tour and interview thanks to Kirsten Dirksen of Faircompanies where you can get his entire story from start to finish, and tour his entire tiny home on a trailer below. Enjoy!

Since Joel is in law school, he needed space for books and he also needed a spot to sit and study. And you’ll see how he arranged for that below.

I just wanted to re-share this couple living in tiny house for a year and how you might be able to benefit from their experience thus far.

That’s right. They’ve been living in a tiny house full time for over a year now. And now they’re sharing the good, the bad, and what they might have done differently.

Plus a few things they actually did change. This kind of information is invaluable to those of us who are in the planning stages of our tiny houses because we get to learn from the experiences of others. And there’s no less costlier and less painful way to learn than that, right?

But overall, I think you’ll probably agree, that they did a near perfect job of a designing the right tiny home for themselves. It’s actually one of my favorites and seems very livable to me. See if you agree then let me know if you think you can live with someone else in it full time in the comments below (and why or why not).

When you walk into this cylindrical micro cabin you can immediately see the ladder to your left which leads you up to the loft.

Beyond that is a daybed with fluffy pillows in front of a beautiful, large round window. Across from that is your table and another window with beautiful views.

These big windows can open up so you can let the outside air in. Outside, nearby, there’s a fire pit you can enjoy. Or you can just relax on your own private deck.

To your right, as you walk in, is the kitchenette area. And the little door nearby leads to the tiny bathroom with a composting toilet and shower. So yes, just about everything you need for comfortable simple living. Do you think you can see yourself living simply in this little cabin on a full time basis? Just curious if you’d like to talk about that in the comments below.

Just wanted to let you know about this GMC school bus to motorhome (RV) conversion that’s for sale right now (UPDATE: SOLD) in the Albany, New York area. It’s listed on Craigslist right now and I found it thanks to one of our awesome readers, Comet. Thanks, Comet!

It’s a 2003 GMC Savanna 3500 with a 5.7L gas V8 and it has around 200,000 miles on it. The current owners converted it into an RV themselves. They owned and lived in it for two years so far and have put 3,000 miles on it, according to the listing. They even installed a receiver hitch on the rear of the bus to tow their SUV with it on their travels.

Inside you’ll find a basic kitchen area, sleeping area, and plenty of shelving to store your stuff. The listing says that they’re selling because they’d like something a little bigger. Asking price WAS $4,500.
