I had heard that it’s nearly impossible to legally have a tiny house for year-round residency in Michigan. I guess if the tiny house is a rental and not lived in as one’s full-time residence, it’s okay. I’ve pretty much given up on my tiny house dream, being stuck here in Michigan. It’s a shame that roadblocks are thrown up in the way of living tiny.
Regulations can vary county to county but Michigan is pushing to allow ADU’s in most areas and in Briley Township in Northern Michigan, they’ve even defined a new type of dwelling, and refers to it as an ‘Economy Efficient Dwelling.’
-Economy Efficient Dwelling is a dwelling that is more than 240 square feet and less than 500 square feet with a minimum side elevation of no less than 12 feet and no more than 20 feet, minimum length of 20 feet and a maximum length of 30 feet built to all Michigan building and sanitary codes and qualifies for a certificate of occupancy.
-An economy efficient dwelling must be placed on a permanent approved foundation.
-These homes are allowed in residential 2, forest rec, and agriculture areas.
Mobile Homes/Manufactured Houses are also an option in pretty much any state…
Michigan also has a number of Long Term and Year Round RV Parks that allow you to stay 180 days or longer…
Sandyoak RV Resort, for example, is unlimited days and even allows the option to own the lot…
So you have some options…

Many communities/states are coming around to allowing ADUs…(Accessory Dwelling Units). My son and wife are currently in the late stages of building a ‘granny flat’, ‘tiny house’, ‘mother in law’ apt.(whatever one wishes to call it) for me to live in and rent from them at a nice low price. Their decision was a result of new zoning regulations in our small town in KY, obviously triggered by changes in nearby Lexington and other cities seeing a need previously forbidden. This couple had looked for a house that included a mother in law apt., but found none in their price range, so they have used their house equity to build this small dwelling for me, who’d had to go to ‘plan C’ for retirement not long after the last major recession. I went to nursing school in Traverse City and love the area of this cute place.
