I sure like the railings on the stairway, and on the loft too.  So many stairways in other tinies look like an accident just waiting to happen—and one I saw a few minutes ago looked like it wouldn’t have to wait long.

Something to note is that railings are often installed by the owner, after they move in, and not always by the builder…

Mind, it’s easier to install the bed, etc. before the railing are installed as they can be in the way otherwise. People also tend to prefer to customize details, which can also save a little versus the builder installing it for them and people can have far more choices and options on how to do it than the builder as well.

However, it’s also something to understand, especially for custom builds, that railings aren’t always safer for everyone. Since, THOWs are often limited in space, the stairs are often only 2 feet wide, instead of the normal 3, and railings can either make someone unable to move naturally, being too narrow a path, or forced to lean out over the edge of the stairs, increasing risk instead of reducing it for certain people…

Remember, people are not all the same, with different body types, heights, etc. customizing the details become important when space is limited to make sure proper ergonomics are achieved to actually make things safer instead of unintentionally making it more dangerous.

THOWs often have to be customized to the specific owner just for practicality. Since, the one size fits all mindset that usually applies to large homes doesn’t work well for tiny houses, as space has to be used more efficiently and optimized for the specific owner’s needs to really work, as what works for one may not work for another and vice versa…

Though, for generic mass produced models, you will usually see railings as they don’t assume the owner will customize and follow more how large homes are built with generic use standards. Most THOWs shown here are just from custom builders but there are mass production model builders too, especially, for Park Model size range.
