This quaint cottage in the Yorkshire Dales surrounded by stunning English gardens is just the place for inspiration on converting your shed into a tiny dwelling!
David took his shed, added heated floors, running water, and a bathroom, and created a perfect secluded guest room with everything you need for a weekend stay. There are even tiny skylights to add some extra sunshine. He also painted the inside a lovely sage green (instead of the standard white/cream), which makes the place particularly cozy.

We’ve seen a lot of people build tiny homes as rental units, but in this case Rodney and his wife rent their larger home and live tiny during the summer!
It all started some years back, when Rodney needed a spot to store his stuff after life took an unexpected turn. Some friends offered a spot on their land if he built a nice-looking shed, so he did just that. But when he got married three years ago and built a “big” house, he and his wife decided to convert the shed into a tiny house so they could rent out their larger home.
What’s awesome about the conversion is they did it on the cheap — he reused cabinets from different kitchens and reclaimed metal roofing which he then painted. The house isn’t filled with fancy things, but is completely practical for the couple’s summer lifestyle. Look at the photos below and watch the video tour with Tiny Home Tours!

Did you think tiny living was only for singles and couples? This family of four’s shed to tiny house conversion destroys that myth.
Outside, you’ll notice a very simple white facade with a metal roof and a center door and two windows flanking it. The family renovated a pre-owned 500 sq. foot storage shed where Krista, her husband, and their 5 and 1-year-old children now live. They were able to arrange the use of relative’s land, bought and converted the shed, hooked up the electricity and got the well water running for only $11,000. But this is just a temporary living situation while they prepare to build a rammed earth home in South Carolina.
When you go inside, you’ll find an open floor plan with burnt orange walls. The kitchen cabinets line up against the back wall and a kitchen table for four sits in the main living area. The older son’s bed sits in the corner of the house just off the parent’s bedroom where the one-year-old also sleeps. The bathroom includes a compostable toilet and they even have an outdoor shower.

This is the story of Kathy’s 16′ x 28′ tiny cottage in Texas which started as a storage building and was converted into this beautiful tiny home you’re about to see. I’ll let Kathy tell the story and share what she’s learned from the experience so far.
My first recommendation when building a tiny home after you’ve zeroed in on your design, unless you’re doing all the work yourself (I was not), is to find people who are on board with your vision. I was really fortunate to find folks that understood what I was trying to do and everyone went above and beyond to make it happen.
My home began as a 16 x 28 storage unit built by Sturdi-bilt in Bastrop, TX. These folks worked with my floor plan adding additional and larger windows, a full light door, higher grade insulation all around and a metal roof. The interior finish out work was done by Golden Rule Construction, a father/son team, that accommodated my every wish. They weren’t real sure about some of my ideas, but at the end, the father told me I was a genius!
It was important to me to be able to utilize some of the pieces of furniture from our county home that I had to leave behind. Some of them were built by my husband and I couldn’t bear to let them go. Some were pieces that were very much a part of our everyday life together and I needed to find a way to keep them near and use them, differently. I couldn’t be more pleased with how everything turned out.
In an effort to save as much money as possible, I did as much of the finish out work as I could, and had a lot of help from family. The total cost for my little home comes in under $35,000 and it’s a beautiful, precious refuge for me. See for yourself!

This is a 384 sq. ft. barn shed that was converted into a tiny home for a total cost of about $11k.
The cost of the shed was about $5,200. Then the couple spent the rest of the money adding the finish work, bathroom, sliding glass door, and more.
Would you ever consider converting a shed into your own tiny home? Let’s talk about it in the comments! Please enjoy, learn more, and re-share below. Thank you!
