Family of Four Living Tiny in an RV

Husband Derrick has a construction job that forces him to move frequently. Wife Alexis said they used to rent homes or apartments, but never really felt like they had a “home.” But 3.5 years ago, they decided to buy an RV so they could bring their house with them no matter where they move to!

They have two young boys who enjoy their bunk room in the middle of the RV. Alexis says they didn’t do a full make-over on their RV but used paint and some new furniture to make it their own without spending a fortune. Speaking of fortune, their RV life saves them thousands per month.

RV Living Q&A with Alexis

What are your name(s)?

Alexis, Derrick, Thomas and Jack.

How long have you lived tiny?

3.5 years

What do you do for work? Or do you travel full-time?

My husband works for a construction company that’s hired by larger companies to build projects that could last from a few months to a few years. We move project to project.

What are you hoping to get out of living tiny/small?

Appreciation for our belongings and the time we have with each other.

Describe your decorating style and philosophy.

Clean and minimal type A beach bum, but make it cozy, inviting and personal.

What inspired you to choose an RV (rather than say a tiny house or a bus)?

We needed the space and something light enough we didn’t need to buy a larger truck.

How did you acquire your home?

We went to an RV dealership.

Did you do a lot of renovations?

All we’ve done is paint, remove some unwanted cabinets and replace furniture.

What are bills/utilities like compared to before?

Night and day difference from renting a 2000sqft home or apartment. We save thousands a month.

Before going tiny, what was life like?

We constantly felt like we didn’t have a place to call our own. Moving every time it felt defeating because we would have to pay to break leases.

Is there anything from your old life that you miss?

More space for guests, but that will come with time. You find a way to make things work with the space you have.

What benefits are you experiencing after going tiny?

I love the fact that I know exactly where everything I own is. It such a nice feeling to not have too much and feel overwhelmed.

What about some challenges?

Moving around eachother with the kids and not feeling like I have my own space. I found that having a set bedtime means I get my time to recharge and have my space back when the kids go to sleep.

What makes your tiny home special?

I think the fact that we have been able to personalize it without completely gutting it. We have done every change while still living in it.

What is your favorite part of your tiny home?

I love our windows and all the natural light a sunny day brings. Makes our space feel so comfortable.

What helpful advice would you give to others interested in going tiny?

Do your research, try (rent) before you buy. You may not need as much space as you think.

Anything I didn’t ask about that we should know?

We are stationary, but still, make the most for outdoor adventures on our boat in the area we are at.
