The River West: A Wood-Fired Scandinavian Sauna on Wheels by Spindrift Homes

The River West is the second mobile sauna from Spindrift Homes in Bend, Oregon, and it takes a more traditional, Scandinavian approach than its larger sibling, the Silverado. It is a 10-foot, fully towable sauna clad in cedar shingles and heated the old-fashioned way, with a wood-fired Harvia stove. Designed for four to six people, it pairs a warm cedar hot room with a small changing room, and it is built to be parked by the water for that classic sauna-then-cold-plunge ritual. It starts at $35,000. Here is a closer look.

A Scandinavian Sauna on Wheels

Where the Silverado is all clean shiplap, the River West leans rustic and timeless, wrapped in Grade-A cedar shingles that weather beautifully and protect against the elements. A slanted corrugated metal roof sheds snow, sheep’s wool insulation (R-13) keeps the heat where you want it, and custom decking on the trailer tongue makes for an easy step up to the door. Hitch it up and the whole sauna travels with you.

Wood-Fired Heat

The heart of the River West is a wood-fired Harvia stove topped with sauna rocks, the traditional choice that purists love for its soft, enveloping heat and the simple ritual of building a fire. Feed it from inside, let the stones come up to temperature, and ladle water over them for a burst of steam. There is no app and no waiting on electricity, just fire, wood, and water.

The Sauna Experience

Inside, clear cedar tongue-and-groove lines the walls, with 1×6 hemlock benches and live-edge shelving adding warmth and character. It is sized for four to six people, intimate enough to feel like a retreat, and the soft light and cedar scent make it the kind of space you settle into and lose track of time in. A few drops of essential oil on the live-edge shelf and the whole room comes alive.

Hot-Cold Therapy Anywhere

Because it is fully mobile, the River West is built for the Nordic ritual of contrast therapy: heat up in the sauna, then plunge into cold water and repeat. Park it by a lake, a river, or your own cold tub, and you have a self-care setup on wheels, complete with a small changing room with a cool-down bench, a live-edge mirror, and shelving for towels and oils.
