The Ford E-450 is one of the most capable platforms for a full-size box van conversion, and when Timberline Vans gets their hands on one, the results are impressive. Based in Golden, Colorado, Timberline Vans specializes in 4×4 conversions that turn standard commercial vehicles into adventure-ready platforms built for off-grid exploration. This particular build showcases what makes box van conversions so appealing to the van life community: standing room, serious cargo capacity, and a rugged chassis that can handle dirt roads and mountain passes alike. With a 6.0-liter diesel engine and Timberline’s signature coil spring 4×4 conversion, this E-450 is built to go places most camper vans can only dream about.

Rugged 4×4 Platform Ready for Any Terrain
What sets this conversion apart from the typical Sprinter or Transit build is the sheer capability of the platform. Timberline’s coil spring 4×4 conversion transforms the E-450 from a delivery truck into an overland-capable vehicle with serious ground clearance. The custom roof rack adds exterior storage and mounting points for gear, solar panels, or whatever your adventure demands. For anyone who wants to camp beyond the reach of paved roads, this kind of platform is hard to beat.

The 12-Foot Box: Room to Build Your Vision
One of the biggest advantages of a box van conversion over a standard cargo van is the interior volume. This E-450 features a 12-foot box with 6’3″ of interior clearance — enough headroom for most people to stand comfortably while cooking, working, or simply enjoying the space. That kind of volume opens up possibilities that smaller vans simply can’t match: a full-size bed without sacrificing living space, a real kitchen setup, and even room for a dedicated workspace.

Fitted Interior with a Clean Starting Point
Timberline’s approach to this build is worth noting: rather than a fully finished camper, they’ve created a fitted interior platform — insulated walls, clean surfaces, and the structural work done right. This gives the next owner a professional-grade foundation to customize exactly how they want. It’s a smart approach that sits between a raw cargo van and a turnkey conversion, saving thousands on the most difficult parts of a build (the 4×4 conversion, insulation, and structural framing) while leaving the fun, personal touches to the owner.

Full-Size Cab and Diesel Power
Under the hood, the 6.0-liter diesel engine provides the kind of torque and reliability that long-distance overlanders need. Diesel engines are known for their longevity and fuel efficiency on the highway, making them ideal for a vehicle that might rack up serious miles on cross-country trips. The full-size cab — a rarity on many box van platforms — means driver and passenger comfort aren’t sacrificed for the sake of living space in the back. It’s a genuine driving vehicle, not just a home that happens to have wheels.

Custom Roof Rack and Exterior Details
The custom roof rack is more than an aesthetic upgrade — it’s a functional necessity for overlanding. With a 12-foot box below, the roof provides a massive platform for solar panels, storage boxes, spare tires, or even a rooftop deck setup. Timberline’s rack is engineered to handle the loads that serious off-grid living demands. The overall exterior profile, while larger than a standard van, still fits in most parking structures and campground spaces — an important practical consideration for anyone planning to use this as a daily driver and weekend adventurer.

A Blank Canvas with Professional Bones
Looking inside, you can see the clean lines of a professionally prepared interior. The walls are finished and insulated, the floor is level and solid, and the electrical and structural groundwork has been laid by people who know what they’re doing. This is the hardest and most expensive part of any van conversion to get right, and having it done professionally means the owner can focus on the creative and personal elements: cabinetry, bedding, kitchen layout, and decor that reflects their own style.

Built for the Long Haul
The Ford E-series has been a workhorse in commercial fleets for decades, and that reliability translates directly to van life. Parts are widely available, mechanics are familiar with the platform, and the chassis is built to handle far more weight than a typical van conversion will ever put on it. When you combine that proven reliability with Timberline’s 4×4 expertise, you get a vehicle that’s ready for years of hard use on and off the pavement.

Golden, Colorado: Where Overland Meets Mountain Living
It’s no coincidence that Timberline Vans operates out of Golden, Colorado — a town nestled at the base of the Rocky Mountains where the pavement meets the wilderness. The surrounding terrain provides the perfect testing ground for their 4×4 conversions, and the local van life community is one of the most active in the country. Builds like this E-450 are designed with Colorado’s mix of highway driving and rugged mountain access roads in mind.

Versatility from Every Angle
Whether you’re planning a weekend camping trip or a full-time life on the road, the E-450 box van platform gives you options that smaller vans simply can’t. The 12-foot box is wide enough for a queen bed across the width (a luxury most van lifers never experience), tall enough for overhead storage, and deep enough for separate living zones. Combined with the 4×4 capability, this conversion represents one of the most versatile mobile living platforms available.

Great base for conversion but lacking space for a bathroom which is a no go for me.
I wish the pics were taken with a regular lense like real space instead of trying to get a lot in one picture. It’s so hard to envision the space with the distortions. How about resubmitting some “real” pics?
