The Kimbo 6: A Frameless Aluminum Escape Pod for Mid-Size Trucks

The Kimbo 6 is a revolutionary truck camper that challenges traditional design by stripping away the unnecessary and focusing on structural integrity and simplicity. Built in Bellingham, Washington, this frameless aluminum monocoque shell is engineered to be as nimble as it is durable, fitting mid-size trucks like the Toyota Tacoma, Ford Ranger, and Chevy Colorado without the bulk of traditional slide-in campers.

The Aluminum Monocoque Advantage

Unlike standard campers that rely on heavy wood or metal frames, the Kimbo 6 features a frameless 0.1” 5052 aluminum monocoque shell. This design, inspired by aircraft and high-end trailers, uses a riveted and sealed single-material construction that is exceptionally strong and lightweight. By eliminating the frame, Kimbo creates more interior space while ensuring the camper won’t rot, warp, or rattle apart on rough trails.

A Four-Season Habitat

Don’t let the metal exterior fool you; the Kimbo 6 is built for year-round adventure. The interior is lined with R5 foam insulation and finished with a brushed fabric that feels cozy rather than industrial. Combined with Arctic Tern double-pane insulated windows—including a panoramic front window—the Kimbo stays warm in the winter and cool in the summer. For extreme cold, the optional Dickinson Marine propane fireplace adds both heat and a welcoming hearth to the small space.

The Modular Interior: Living Large in a Small Footprint

Inside, the Kimbo 6 feels surprisingly spacious thanks to its 75-inch interior height. The “mudroom” entryway features a teak-slatted floor with a drain, perfect for shedding wet gear before stepping onto the luxury foam seating. The layout is intentionally modular; owners can opt for a “Ready-to-Camp” version with factory-installed modules like a sink, refrigerator, and swivel table, or choose the “Builder” platform to create their own custom DIY interior.

What Makes This Build Special

  • Weight Efficiency: At under 1,000 lbs, the Kimbo 6 stays within the payload capacity of most mid-size trucks, preserving off-road performance and fuel economy.
  • Durability: The riveted aluminum construction is designed to outlast the truck it’s sitting on, with no organic materials in the shell to rot or mold.
  • Simplicity: By focusing on “plug and play” systems and few moving parts, Kimbo reduces the maintenance headaches often associated with complex RVs.
  • Modular Customization: The ability to add or remove modules (like the sink or desk) allows the camper to evolve with the owner’s needs.
