Doug and Mindy had been bus drivers and subway operators up until retiring. Nothing had been handed to them; they weren’t wealthy: they had no construction experience — but they knew traveling the continent in a converted bus was their dream! So they found a transit bus at auction and began converting it.

The bus has an incredible amount of solar, so Mindy can bake and cook with all electric appliances. To keep costs down, they used mostly reclaimed and recycled materials found on Facebook Marketplace. Doug even got special signs designed to flash in the LED destination sign area, so he can change them depending on his mood! This couple is just too sweet — you’re going to love the tour below.

The Wooly Mammoth is an incredible skoolie featuring two giant couches with the capacity to seat up to 10 people (with seatbelts)! Originally, the school bus was going to be a tour vehicle for the musical group that Isaac and Julie were a part of, but when the band broke up, they decided to keep the skoolie dream alive.

It took about 4 years to complete the conversion, but the end result is exactly what they wanted. There’s a large kitchen across from a two-part bathroom with a spacious shower, an elevator bed on a crank system in the back of the bus, and the couches become a giant bed perfect for lounging on while watching some TV. Enjoy the full tour below!

Ginnie and Austin met during their time in the Army and spent their last year in service building out a skoolie, so they could enjoy their newfound freedom and see the country.

Their pink (ish) rig is beautifully designed to offer maximum comfort for themselves and their pets. They prioritized tons of counter space, a big couch that becomes a second bed, and a cozy back bedroom with a queen-sized mattress. Enjoy their skoolie tour below!

This is a stunning bus conversion made exactly to the needs of DJ and Rachel and their three wonderful dogs. They live in it part-time for vacations since they have a “regular” house and full-time jobs. While they might like to someday travel full-time, it’s simply not in the cards at this time.

They’ve been vacationing in it for two years after a very methodical build process. Instead of getting the cheapest and quickest things, they took time to make it exactly how they wanted it and spent more than they planned (seems to be the way with most projects!). Enjoy a tour of the space below.

For about 12 years, Salina & Marcelo had been eyeing tiny house living, but it wasn’t until they went to Iceland, and met all kinds of people living nomadically that they decided it was time to make it happen!

They wanted something custom, and so they went with a shuttle bus and made it theirs, complete with a hidden shower set-up! There’s also a really cool collage table that they explain in their video tour. Enjoy!

Karen and Chris worked hard and raised six children together, but for their retirement, they’ve hit the road in a self-converted skoolie to see more of the country! While they miss their kids, it’s been so fun to travel around together.

Their conversion is beautiful, and it’s fun to see a skoolie with no roof raise, just to give you an idea of what you can still do in a space with lower ceilings. They included everything to make themselves comfortable — even a soaking tub! You’ll love the tour below.

Tom and Jodie aren’t quite retirement age, but with an empty nest they were ready for a new chapter and didn’t want to wait another 20 or so years of work to get there! So they sold their home, purged a lifetime of belongings, and built out a Bluebird bus.

Their 35-foot bus got a professionally-done 20-inch roof-raise, but they did the rest of the work themselves. Tom chose to put all the plumbing inside the bus, so they don’t have to worry about freezing temperatures. Let us know what you think in the comments!

I love a touch of whimsy, and Irwin the Skoolie has just that with the adorable curtain “eyes” that grace the front of the bus. Bright blue, they make Irwin seem like a fun place to live.

Owners Mike and Mandi would agree! When 2020 hit, Mike’s longtime dream of an alternative living space finally felt possible. Mandi was able to teach remotely and became a health coach, and so they created a perfect tiny house complete with a massive bathroom with plenty of shower space.

Buslife offered a more affordable lifestyle to help Natalie and Gabe meet their goals. They purchase the bus already gutted, and moved in right away! They’ve been converting their rig as they travel and while they live in it, which is super neat.

We have some great pictures of their tiny home below, along with a Q&A that you can read. Enjoy!
