There’s something about a small cabin on the coast of Maine that just speaks to me. The Pine Cabin is a 420-square-foot retreat nestled on a former saltwater farm in Sedgwick, Maine, and it’s one of the most thoughtfully designed small cabins I’ve come across.

Architects Bill Bowick and David Bouffard discovered this waterfront property and knew it deserved something special. Working with builder Jon Ellsworth of Carding Brook Farm, they designed and constructed three boat-inspired cabins on the land. The Pine is the smallest of the three, and honestly, it might be my favorite. It’s a studio-style layout with everything you need and nothing you don’t.

What really sets this cabin apart is that it was built using pine milled right on the property. That kind of connection between the structure and the land it sits on is rare, and you can feel it the moment you step inside.

Below, Kevin and Elizabeth give us a look inside the 420-square-foot Montana cabin they built for just $7,000 — yes, really. Even though the project came together before the lumber-price madness of 2020, that number is still wild for what they pulled off. This little guest cabin feels cozy, finished, and downright welcoming.

They kept costs low by getting creative: using around 40% reclaimed materials, hunting for second-hand finds, and accepting a few generous hand-me-downs from friends and family. Inside, you get everything you need — a kitchen, bathroom, loft bedroom, and even a comfy spot to eat at the butcher-block bar. It’s the kind of place you could stay for a weekend… or never want to leave.

Daymon did a lot of research about other eco retreats and glamping resorts and found the biggest complaint across the board was with the bathhouses. So he determined to win the bathhouse war and make the nicest glamping showers you’ve ever seen! They have endless hot water, multiple shower heads, exposed copper piping, and mirrors, yet still retain a rustic charm with sinks carved out of wood slabs.

Byrd Creek is an amazing glamping resort filled with tiny cabins built from wood, which felled on the property and hewn by a local sawmill. There’s a community kitchen on site as well, and the creek is perfect for tubing!

Donelle’s father left her some lovely property by a marsh, and she had promised him she’d do something great with it — so she had a lovely little cottage built on it, and plans on having a treehouse built in the future!

This 320 sq. ft. cottage has a garage underneath and the living space up top. It’s studio-style with a queen bed on one end and the kitchen on the other. A little bathroom with a tub finishes off the space. What do you think?
