These travel trailer to cabin conversions are for those of you who love the idea of tiny living but want to remain as mobile as possible.

With a trailer renovation like this you can still move about since these units are aerodynamic and lighter in weight than stick built homes on trailers.

And even if you don’t want to move around very often, trailers renovated like this easily serve as tiny cabins on your land.

That’s why I’m showing you these two classic trailers that have been tastefully renovated and decorated for the simple life.

If you’ve ever wanted a treehouse as a kid and are now interested in tiny living I think you’ll love this..

It’s a micro cabin with a balcony/deck that hovers over the main house on the property.

But it’s not just any kid’s fort either… This is a fully functioning micro cabin with:

  • kitchenette
  • sleeping loft
  • downstairs bed
  • fireplace
  • wall mounted LCD TV
  • outdoor shower/bathroom

This off grid modern solar house in California isn’t tiny or even that small… But since it’s 100% off the grid I thought it was a smart enough design to include here.

At 1200 sq. ft. it would make a great home for a family or person who spends lots of time at home. It’s called the IT HOUSE and is made of glass and metal in the middle of the beautiful desert landscape in Pioneertown, California. The design system used to build this house was created by Taalman Koch.

How can you not like this modernized tiny cottage of just 250 square feet with a sleeping loft in Seattle?

It’s built by Michelle de la Vega who is an artist and designer in the area. Do you agree when they say the cottage is modern and rustic? I do.

My favorite part about it is how everything about it seems ‘normal’ sized even though it’s just 250 sq. ft. which I think might be important when sharing space with others for long periods.

It has a wood burning stove, big french doors and a large bathtub you can get wrinkly in while rejuvenating.

I’m excited to share this story with you on how one of our readers recently made a big change in her life by downsizing from a 1200 sq. ft. home into a 300 sq. ft. tiny bungalow with a loft.

And she’s here to share her story with you today so I took the chance to ask her a few questions I thought you might want to ask that might help you on your journey towards living simply.

In many cases, people own their own land and build tiny on their own property mortgage-free which is a great way to do it but it’s not the only way to start living a simpler life.

I’ve been covering tiny houses and other smaller and alternative types of housing for the last few years and I can say that it’s easy to find great examples of small homes every day.

What bothers me is that the majority of what I find is the opposite of affordable housing. It’s normally boutique hotels, places to go “glamping”, and/or expensive real estate in highly populated areas.

And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with any of that. I think it’s great that there are all of these ways that people who aren’t in need can explore and discover housing that might one day make their lives better through simplicity.

And all of this helps lead to making our world better (environmentally, socially and economically). But now, more than ever, there seems to be a dire need for truly affordable and smarter housing. And in this area of Austin, Texas, one man is leading the way to accomplishing that right now.

The goal? To help get 200 people back on their feet and out of homelessness.

It’s a 29 acre property with tiny cottages, teepees, and travel trailers completely dedicated to serving 200 local people who are chronically homeless.

“Allan Graham is the man behind the vision. A former businessman, he took it upon himself to change the life of Austin’s homeless population.”

Almost two years ago I showed you this Japanese inspired tiny zen cabin in the woods.

Recently Kirsten Dirksen of Faircompanies went out to visit the owner/builder to create a video tour and interview based on the home.

Brian Schulz is the owner/builder of the cabin and he built it completely by hand for just $11,000 and about a year and a half of free time.

The home has a 14′ by 16′ footprint. He milled most of the wood himself right on site and used mostly recycled materials to complete the house.

The Cricket is a light weight pop-up trailer that is perfect for your next possible road adventure.

Not as simple and inexpensive as a teardrop camper (like the one I showed you yesterday)..

But it’s really flexible, modern, sleek and still relatively affordable for an RV/travel trailer.

The one I’m showing you today you can actually rent and try out for yourself if you’re ever in the Portland, Oregon area.

The best part is that you can get it dropped off within 50 miles of the location or you can make the trek there yourself.

I thought, “what an awesome way to try something like this out without having to fork out thousands of dollars.”

So I did what any blogger would do.. Share it with you here on Tiny House Talk!

I ran into this video on teardrop camping put together by a couple who really seem to enjoy traveling with their DIY micro camper.

If you’ve ever wanted to own an RV or miss it but don’t miss the cost of doing it you might want to consider teardrop trailers.

They’re small and lightweight, pretty inexpensive to buy and fairly easy to build one yourself.

Ever since I learned about them I thought they’re such a great way to travel and enjoy life without hurting the wallet too bad.

For lots of reasons, too. Not only are they cheap to buy or build, but they’re easy to tow. Some people even tow their teardrops with 4-cylinder vehicles so you don’t even need a truck to have one.
