If you’re thinking about getting a composting toilet for your tiny house (or any size house, really) then read this first.
You can always check out the top 5 composting toilets we recommend for tiny houses. But sometimes nothing beats doing it yourself. It’s cheaper, it’s more rewarding, and you’ll appreciate it more because you built it! And yes, you can still keep the smell away. All it takes is sawdust.
It’s a relatively simple project and won’t cost you more than $60 in materials to complete. You might even be able to find scrap materials and build your own composting toilet for free. That sounds better than spending up to $1,750 on composting toilets like the ones I showed you here, right?
There’s nothing wrong with any of the composting toilets on the market. In fact, the ones I mentioned here are pretty awesome. It’s just that not everybody has that kind of money to spend. So why not consider a simple solution like this if you and your family are open to it? Especially if you’re into carpentry already, right? This 8′ x 24′ tiny house for sale is built on a trailer and offers about 192 sq. ft. of space. If you include the lofts it’s about 296 sq. ft. of space.
There’s a 3′ x 4′ porch before you go inside. It was built two years ago by Scott Stewart of Slabtown Customs in Mountainview, Arkansas but it’s now located in Austin, Texas.
Inside you’ll find a built-in couch, window seats with built in storage, a closet, and a full size bathroom.

One of the downfalls of tiny houses is that unfortunately they can sometimes be vulnerable to theft.
When I hear about something like this happening I think about how we can help prevent this from happening altogether because it’s so frustrating.
I wrote a post about that here a while back but I’m always looking for more ideas and preventative measures we can take. So if you have any of your own ideas and even design tips feel free to share links, etc. in the comments below (or in this post).
In this case this tiny cabin was stolen right from its foundation and towed away during the day. Fortunately, it was found a day later and recovered by deputies thanks to a local news story that aired locally. The cabin measures 10′ x 20′. Unfortunately, many of their personal items are now missing and parts of the cabin were damaged during the theft.

I’m excited to show you how this British artist turned “eco architect” has literally created his own piece of land on a floating island made out of more than 100,000 plastic bottles. Essentially he has built his own island with other people’s trash. His name is Richart Sowa. And he’s been doing this for many years now. Since 2008, he has been letting people tour his island and tiny home. That’s how we got this video (thanks to Rose Robin, who toured it and published the video tour and interview back in 2013.)
So far Richart’s island has been featured in newspapers, TV shows, documentaries, and more. It’s been shared all over the world. Even in an MTV Extreme Cribs episode back in 2011. And Richart Sowa is just keeping busy making constant improvements to his island. As of 2013, his island features three beaches, two ponds, one house, solar panels, and more. In the future? I had to share this amazing DIY micro camper that doubles as a boat with you. It’s called the Mini Camper Cruiser. And it can even sit up to four people. I guess we can even call this one a micro houseboat!
This boat/camper was originally designed by Craig Titmus of Australia. Right now there are PDF plans you can purchase and download to build it yourself on DuckWorks Boatbuilder’s Supply. This tiny house design features a murphy bed (so you don’t have to go up and down a ladder to go to sleep).
