When Katy Zientek was pregnant with her second daughter, she spent her evenings watching tiny house shows on Netflix. Something about the idea resonated. After seven years of renting, she and her husband Michael had a family shed on their Texas property that wasn’t being used. What if they could transform it into a real home? Not a temporary solution or a compromise, but a charming farmhouse cottage they could actually live in — for about $15,000 in materials.
That vision became reality. Over the course of nine months, from September 2020 to May 2021, the couple turned an ordinary storage shed into a 280-square-foot home complete with a downstairs bedroom, full kitchen, open living area, bathroom, and a covered front porch. They did most of the work themselves with help from friends on weekends, and hired a contractor only for the porch construction. The result is a charming, fully functional tiny home that allowed them to stop renting and start building equity — all while staying well under $20,000.
This is what shed conversions offer: an accessible path to homeownership that doesn’t require years of saving or taking on massive debt. If you already have a shed structure or can acquire one affordably, you’re starting with the foundation, framing, and roof already in place. What remains is insulation, systems, and finishes — challenging work, but achievable for determined DIYers willing to learn as they go.

Back in 2016, Lindsay was tired of the urban young adult scene of finding bars and drinking. After going to Austin with a friend and seeing tons of Airstreams, she made a 6 month plan to get her own — and then bought one three weeks later!
After about two years in the Airstream, she upgraded to a super neat 4×4 adventure rig on a flatbed truck. This housetruck comes complete with a spacious bathroom with shower and toilet — Lindsay says she has no problem admitting she’s not trying to “rough it.” She has her blow dryer and hair straightener and plenty of clothes. And that has set her up for success!
She was already working remotely before hitting the road, so now she’s able to “live everywhere” and make money while she’s exploring! Enjoy the interview from Tiny Home Tours below.

Sometimes living tiny is a lifestyle choice, and other times it’s a stepping stone on a journey. For this awesome family of five, downsizing into a camper is allowing them to save a whopping $1,500/month so they can save up to buy land and build their dream home. The Price family is a great lesson in delayed gratification.
That said, their home (while tiny) is gorgeous! It’s light and airy with fun pops of color, and a far cry from the drab and dark canvas they started with. Despite being cooped up in an itty-bitty space with three kids under three, mom Angelina said her love life with husband Cliff has been better than ever before because the only place they can really hang out once the kids are asleep is in their bed ? Amazing!
We got to interview Angelina about living tiny with littles, so be sure to read that Q&A after the photo tour! And go ahead and follow the family on Instagram here.
