Joey’s story isn’t one you’d expect — he nailed the “dream job” of working in mechanical and biomedical engineering for the FBI in Washington, D.C. — and then realized it wasn’t for him! He got a different job working as a software engineer that ended up going remote in 2020 — and before he knew it, Joey was buying and converting a van.

He’s lived in the van you’ll see below for three years on and off. In the “off” time, he’s been backpacking around the world, living even more simply than he does in his rig. He designed it to stand up to all kinds of weather, and just wait until you see the neat way he included a shower, closet, and pantry into his home on wheels.

Alexi works as a travel nurse, and a van allows her to have a home away from home while she goes from spot to spot. She initially thought she’d get a cheap old van and throw a mattress in it, but her dad encouraged her to “do it right” and that she did! Her van is lovely with all the features of a home — including a bathroom with a shower!

She chose the controversial “convertible” layout, with a dinette that becomes her bed. This makes the van seem extra open and lovely! The inclusion of a back table that slides out from the garage is a great way to expand the living space outdoors.

Sophia and Forest began their tiny house build at a tiny house workshop they attended, where the other participants and two teachers helped them build the tiny house frame. While that process went quickly, it took the couple another year to complete the inside of the build on their own.

And wow! What a great job they did. They spent about $45,000 on the gooseneck tiny house, disclosing that they had help from parents and grandparents to fund the project. Toward the completion of the build they were concerned about finding a parking spot and asked on Facebook, and ended up with a lovely wooded spot where they trade some labor and $400/month for their amazing home base.

Have you ever heard of anyone taking on a large-scale construction project and coming in under budget? Well, now you have! Kate and Benoît returned to New Zealand after years of international travel and managed to build themselves a tiny house on wheels for only $38,000, which was less than they had planned.

How did they manage it? The couple made clever use of all kinds of reclaimed and thrifted materials, spending money where it mattered most to them, and saving it wherever they could. Right now, it’s parked on her parent’s land, but they’re on the lookout for a spot of their own to create a small homestead.

Like so many others, Elizabeth joined vanlife because of the shutdowns of 2020. When she stumbled across vanlife on YouTube, she was hooked!

Through a series of events, she ended up purchasing a short bus and converting it into her own home on wheels. She has a remote job and is able to travel while living in her adorable bus named Wanda. The rig is perfect for her and her pets, and she loves life on the road. We had the privilege of interviewing her for this post, and you can read her story in her own words below.

How do you go tiny with teenagers? You build two! Or at least that’s what worked for Wayne, Anthea, and their two daughters, Darienne and Remony. Wayne is an architect who wanted to design his own space, and building two tiny homes for their family sounded like a fun project.

The girls were 15 and 17 when they moved in three years ago, and now they’re adults enjoying their private “apartment” while still getting together by the outdoor patio area in the evenings. The homes were DIY builds, and everyone got involved! They’re able to park them on a friend’s farm, in exchange for Anthea’s farm help. What a fun set-up!

Jono and Taryn are an awesome couple with three girls, ages 8, 6, and 4, who are traveling full-time to see the United States! While they originally toyed with the idea of an RV, they preferred the idea of converting a skoolie that they could customize for their family’s needs.

This is a standard-height bus, with no roof raise, but there are strategic skylights throughout to allow Jono to stand upright in the kitchen, where he’s the chef. The dining room table is one of the coolest features of this home, but you’ll love all the clever and well-designed features.

Kath set out to live nomadically in 2017, when she purchased an RV and hit the road — for three days. She didn’t like pulling her house and hated the black tank — and ended up moving abroad instead! But she had nothing to come home to, so she decided to build a van conversion and live out of that when stateside.

She intentionally chose a lower profile van so she could stealthily park just about anywhere, and she’s made very few exterior modifications. On the inside, she wanted a fixed bed so she could crawl into it and fall asleep whenever she felt like it. She travels with a roof pod filled with her materials to do craft markets for her real flower jewelry, and a typewriter for creating poetry. Enjoy the tour!
