Caleb was in college when he realized college wasn’t for him, and he needed a new direction. A friend urged him to just go for something, so he converted the back of his Subaru and started traveling. Eventually, he upgraded to his DIY Astro Van which he lived in for another year.

The video below shows off his nice low-top van conversion, complete with a little kitchen and fixed bed set-up. He’s now traveling via bicycle, with all his camping gear strapped on! Now *that’s* minimalism.

Samantha was flying around the world, paying for an apartment she rarely used, and she knew something had to give. When the events of 2020 shut down travel, she bought a van and converted it in 3 months. It’s been the best option for her, allowing her to bring “home” to the airport, so it’s there waiting for her when she gets back.

The best part? She only spent $7K on her DIY conversion! The inside of her rig is super cute with lots of dark-stained wood contrasting with pale pink flowers. Let us know what you think.

Aj and Ayana were both separately interested in a nomadic lifestyle when they fell in love. It didn’t take long for them to find a bus that they built into a home, complete with a rooftop deck, fixed bed, and hide-away composting toilet.

Aj is a writer and chef, and authored a cookbook about how to cook amazing meals in a tiny bus (or van) kitchen. Ayana works as a dreamwork practitioner and makes beautiful jewelry. They’re still working on finding that perfect balance of travel/adventure and calm/rest. What’s your favorite part of their bus?

If you’re looking for a tiny house that’s *not* on wheels, cabin kits can be a great choice. This little 485 sq. ft. cabin kit from eLogHomes has a simple layout with two “sleeping nooks” on the first floor. You can even fit in a full bathroom!

eLogHomes offers a couple of packages for finishes, and you find a builder to finish out the plumbing, electrical etc. They said the kits usually cost between $45 and $85 per square foot ($21K-$41K), and then you pay to finish it.

Seth was already converting a rig when he met Christy, but when they got married, she wasn’t interested in living in a vehicle. Eventually, however, she warmed up to the idea, and they ended up converting an ambulance together, so they could see more of the United States.

While they removed the name “ambulance” from the outside, it still mostly looks like an emergency vehicle to keep them pretty stealthy. They have a hidden AC unit, a convertible bed, and a shower which they use all the time! Enjoy their video tour below.

Aaron and his wife Sarah live full-time in the 2002 Chevy Express 2500 that he converted for just $22k (including the $6k for the bus itself). He had always dreamed of traveling, so he could enjoy all kinds of adventure sports, and was lucky enough to find a partner who loved the same things.

Amazingly, he documented the entire build process, and you can see a 50-second video below of a time-lapse of the conversion! He also has a few more videos explaining the build process and the choices they made. Check it out below!

Aries Soul Traveler loved traveling but couldn’t keep dropping $600 for a weekend stay in a hotel. When she found vanlife, it seemed like the perfect solution — her own budget-friendly hotel room on wheels! She lives in a townhome and takes her van on adventures during the weekends (and vacations).

She hired a local carpenter to help her create the most adorable van conversion I’ve seen so far. This shabby-chic farmhouse van has weathered wood and vintage-inspired appliances that make this rig feel like a cozy cottage. What do you think?
