Now, this is an inspirational van life story! Caleigh was born with cystic fibrosis, a medical condition that attacks the lungs. She spent the majority of her childhood and adult life seriously ill, and in and out of the hospital. After not one, but two double lung transplants, she was finally well enough to enjoy life but was stuck at home due to travel bans.
After giving van life a trial run to escape the pollution from California wildfires, she and her husband Brian decided to do van life full-time! With the full support of their families and her medical team, they were able to create a rig and a lifestyle that supports Caleigh’s medical needs and allows her to live life to the fullest. This 28-foot Modern Farmhouse build leans on two details that punch above their cost: shiplap and skylights. The sleeping loft is reached by storage stairs rather than a ladder and lit by a large skylight — which is the difference between a loft you tolerate and one you actually want to wake up in. A second storage loft sits above the bathroom.
The kitchen is the showpiece: a double-sided farmhouse sink, periwinkle cabinets, butcher block countertops, an apartment-sized fridge, and a propane stove and oven. The bathroom pairs a four-foot bathtub and detachable shower head with a subway-tiled surround and a Separett composting toilet. A mini-split handles heating and cooling.
Editor’s note: this new-construction home was listed at $79,000 in New Jersey in early 2024 and has sold. Current listings are linked below.
