Wanaka’s Tiny House dispute leaves one with a mistrust of this side of the building industry…with a pending court situation.

Not limited to any one side, in any form of commerce there’s a risk that one side or both will try to something underhanded to the other as there is always the risk of dealing with a dishonest person. This thus goes for both builders and their clients as either can be the dishonest party…

So doing business without a legally binding agreement that sets rules is thus not advised but once you have one then both sides can be protected and a mutually beneficial outcome can be the likely result…

The example you gave is one in which there was no such contract, just an agreement that was changed… Not enough details are public to really tell if one side or the other is the guilty party, the buyer was the one who changed the agreement first, switching to another builder after the build had already started, but could be because of something the builder did or they just have mutual distrust and are going back and forth trying to get assurances to the point it’s going to need to be settled in court… It may be just one big misunderstanding but these things often escalate even when both sides had the best intentions.

Reasons can also vary, sometimes people just don’t get along and a builder’s personality conflicts with the clients or vice versa… Among other reasons things don’t always go smoothly…

So, just like when hiring a contractor… Get the contract and have everyone involved agree to it… Much less headaches then… Tiny House builders aren’t any different from builders of traditional houses, just people in the trades who cater to a different type of house. So same rules apply as far as doing business with them…

This is a *fantastic* list! Love it. This is an invaluable list for those of us weighing up who to go with! Have you thought about updating recently? I can see builders like https://podlife.co.nz/ are missing from the list 😀

A great list indeed. However like Jamie mentioned, you can also add https://amazingspacesnz.com/ so people get more option of where to choose from. By the way it’s a cool concept as I am trying to get one for myself as well.
